HEWEB09 Notes

Session notes from HighEdWeb09

See also my conference recap, my photos ( set 1, set 2), the conference Flickr set, and the conference Twitter stream.

Here, in mostly chronological order, is a big dump in one giant page of all my session notes from HighEdWeb 2009. Most of the presentations themselves will be available for download on the conference site. These are just the points, links, and quotes I found interesting enough to type into Evernote while attending the sessions.

APS1: ADA and Section 508: Best Practices for Web Accessibility for People with Disabilities

This was my first session of the conference, and it set the bar pretty high. Lots of good stuff about accessibility. The main point seemed to be that while standards compliance is good, just fixing the errors in your page to get a clean run through a validator tool doesn’t create usable, accessible web pages. It is much better to learn to code in an accessible manner, and to take the time to understand why the accessibility guidelines are there. Coding HTML in a usable, accessible manner produces better, more usable code. Loved the quote from a designer, "I learned this stuff because of Web accessibility. I use this stuff because its better Web design."

New Blogs

I am not giving up on Drupal, but for quick and easy blogs, I have become a huge fan of Tumblr. As a result, I’ve moved the Christian Horror Blog over there and back-ported all the entries, and created new blogs for Sunam and myself. Check ‘em out. I’ll still be using this site for larger posts, but all the quick stuff, random thoughts, and photos from my phone will be going on over there.

The new blogs are listed in site sidebar, and there is always the blog list on the menu bar up top.

Our money is not as cool as your money

The other day we got a $5 bill back in change, and noticed a big purple numeral 5 on the back. Sunam and I debated for several minutes whether or not it was real currency, then launched into a lively discussion of how cool the differnt Euro designs are, compared to US currency.

At work someone sent me this link http://www.typography.com/ask/showBlog.php?blogID=93 so I guess it was a real $5 bill.

Michael Bierut Talks Type

Terrific video interview with Michael Bierut; topics range from Kubrick’s favorite font to the various cover designs of Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye. There is a link below the video to a companion article from The Atlantic

So I am not a designer by training, and this is where my ignorance and outsider status come into embarrasing play… even though I’d seen interviews with him before, until reading the article I didn’t realize Beruit is one of the editors over at Design Observer, which is a source of all sorts of goodness. He talks about his book (which nobody bought me for Christmas) here.

Finally, more pictures of Nolan!

We get many calls and emails with demands for updated pictures. We apologize for depriving fans of The Cuteness of their Nolan fix. We will try to do better in the future. Your wait has finally come to a glorious end, however, as there are many albums to peruse for new Nolan pictures. First, we added a few to the album Months six through nine. Second, we created an album of Nolan’s first Christmas trip. Finally, we have the most recent pics of Nolan in the album, Nine months through…, which we will continue to update for the final months of his first year. That’s right! His first birthday is just around the corner. Yikes!

Finally, my very own blog!

I still have some stuff to figure out in order to post here regularly, but once I figure out my thoughts, I will post regularly. Well, that’s my story.

Half-birthday Pictures

Nolan recently celebrated his half birthday (can you believe it?!), so it’s again time to upgrade his photo album. For post-half-birthday pics visit Six months through… and see how much Nolan (aka The Cuteness) has grown!

We realize Nolan’s album had been sadly lacking updates as of late (we apologize to his many fans). To make up for this lapse, we added pictures to his previous album Months three through six to fill in the gap. Enjoy!
